Springfield students on the MSU-West Plains campus who plan to graduate in fall 2019, spring or summer 2020 with a bachelor’s, master’s, specialist or doctoral degree are eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony locally at the West Plains Civic Center, or at the ceremony held on the MSU-Springfield campus. MSU-West Plains has one commencement ceremony per year (in the spring semester), while the MSU-Springfield campus holds commencement at the conclusion of each semester.

Commencement

The spring 2020 commencement ceremony will be held at the West Plains Civic Center, Saturday, May 16, 2020 at 10 a.m. Rehearsal for commencement will be held at the West Plains Civic Center on Friday, May 15, 2020 from 1-3 p.m.

Students should arrive at 9 a.m. at the West Plains Civic Center the day of commencement and pick up their name cards at the check-in table to carry to the stage during the ceremony. You may make changes on the name card of how you would like for your name to be announced as you walk across stage. There will be an area behind the stage for students to change into their caps and gowns. A professional photographer will take individual and group pictures prior to the ceremony. Order forms and picture prices/packages will be available.

Eligibility

You are eligible to attend the commencement ceremony in West Plains in the spring if you are completing your degree at the end of fall 2019, spring 2020, or have 6 hours or less to complete in order to graduate by the end of the summer 2020 semester.

Exit Exam:

All bachelor degree candidates must complete the University Assessment Exit Exam prior to graduation. This exam is now completely online and can be taken from anywhere. Students graduating will need to register for the exam through BearPass or My Missouri State. You need to register for any of the GEN 499 sections for the semester in which you plan to graduate: GEN 499 University Exit Examination

Intent to Graduate:

If you plan to graduate in spring, you will be required to file an Intent to Graduate or application to graduate online or print out and send to the main campus.

If you won’t be graduating until the end of the summer semester, you will need to fill out the Intent to Graduate and list “summer” as the graduation semester instead of spring.

If you plan to graduate in fall 2019, you would need to indicate fall as your semester of graduation. You may fax, mail, or scan and email the form to the Office of the Registrar. The form has the fax number and address to send to if needed. Students may also apply to graduate online through My Missouri State. A YouTube video is also available to help with the application process.

Caps, Gowns, Tassels, Hoods, and Announcements:

Springfield students who plan to graduate and attend commencement in West Plains may order their caps and gowns from the Drago College Bookstore on the West Plains campus. Announcements should be ordered through the Springfield bookstore (instructions are listed below). Regalia is maroon for students graduating with bachelor’s degrees. Those graduating with master’s, specialist or doctoral degrees will have black regalia. Please make sure that you have the correct color regalia for the degree that you are receiving.

Scholastic Honors:

If you are eligible to receive an honor cord for a bachelor’s degree, those will be provided to you at no cost and they will be available for pickup at commencement rehearsal or the day of the commencement ceremony. A list of students eligible for honors will be provided from the Springfield campus. You will be notified via email if you should pick up a cord. If you have questions about scholastic honors please read the academic regulations or you may also contact the Office of the Registrar in Springfield at 417-836-5520.

Graduation Announcements:

If you choose to order graduation announcements, you may order them online from the Baker Bookstore or www.herffjones.com. Specific instructions for ordering will be posted here soon. Your cap and gown may be purchased at the Drago College Bookstore in West Plains. 

Students who plan to graduate should check with their advisors and review their degree audit to cover any questions and finalize graduation details.
