Catch a contagious passion for teaching earning an MSU education degree

Karman Berkich an elementary education student at Missouri State University in Lebanon.

Missouri State Outreach Lebanon student, Karman Berkich, is pursuing an elementary education degree, and is dually enrolled in the accelerated master's program in literacy education.

"Each class, I usually hear one or two stories from my professors in regards to teachable moments that have happened with their students. Hearing how passionate my teachers are about their profession is nothing but inspiring."

Passion for teaching is in no short supply for Karman. "As a child I always said, 'I want to be a teacher when I grow up.' " Through a range of jobs related to education—pre-school teacher, cheerleading coach, paraprofessional—she deepened her resolve to become a teacher.

When it came to picking a higher education institution, Missouri State was at the top of her list. "I chose MSU for its well-known education program.”

“Teaching is something I have always wanted to do, and I knew I wanted the best education possible." Missouri State University's reputation for teaching and leading educators is well known across the state.

As a native of Lebanon, MO, MSU-Lebanon offered the convenience of classes close to home. MSU's small class sizes has allowed Karman to build close relationships with her professors and peers, which has paid off in many ways, including extra time in classroom observations.

The flexibility of the class formats in MSU-Lebanon has allowed Karman to work while in school. "Keeping my grades up, while working full-time has never been easy, but a 4.0 grade point average is something to be proud of." After graduation, Karman hopes to teach 2nd grade.
