What is a MOOC? How does it work?
MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course. These courses are offered for free, but at this time there is no credit associated with the MOOCs. When you click on the links below, you will be asked to create a free account with our partner Canvas.net in order to enroll in the course. Each week, new material will be available – readings, lectures, and discussion.
Can I receive credit?
At this time, there is no credit associated with our massive online courses. However, Missouri State University does offer for-credit versions of these courses that you may wish to explore after completing the MOOCs.
Can I enroll late?
You can enroll in the MOOC at any point. The Ozarks course will run for 10 weeks and will be open for 2 additional weeks afterward so participants can finish up any remaining content. The Laura Ingalls Wilder course will run for 8 weeks and will also be available for 2 additional weeks. Even if the courses have already begun, please feel free to jump in at any point.
How much time will the course take each week?
The courses are designed to take about 2-3 hours per week for a participant with an average reading speed. However, as this is not a course in which you will receive a grade you can be extremely flexible with your time.
Do I have to be enrolled at Missouri State to participate?
You do not need to be enrolled at Missouri State University to participate in these courses. Current and former students of Missouri State University are welcome, as are any other interested participants.
How much does it cost?
The MOOCs are offered free of charge. The Ozarks course does not require any additional materials. The Laura Ingalls Wilder course does require the purchase of several books; they are listed on our site and should be widely available at local libraries as well.
