Graduation Details for Outreach Students in West Plains

Springfield students on the MSU-West Plains campus who plan to graduate in spring 2017 with a bachelor’s or master’s degree are eligible to participate in the commencement ceremony locally at the West Plains Civic Center, or at the ceremony held on the MSU-Springfield campus. MSU-West Plains has one commencement ceremony per year, while the MSU-Springfield campus holds commencement at the conclusion of each semester.


The spring 2017 commencement ceremony will be held at the West Plains Civic Center, Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 10am. Rehearsal for commencement will be held at the West Plains Civic Center on Friday, May 19, 2017 at 1pm.

Students should arrive at 9am at the West Plains Civic Center the day of commencement and pick up their name cards at the check-in table to carry to the stage during the ceremony. You may make changes on the name card of how you would like for your name to be announced as you walk across stage. There will be an area behind the stage for students to change into their caps and gowns. A professional photographer will take individual and group pictures prior to the ceremony. Order forms and picture prices/packages will be available.

You are eligible to attend the commencement ceremony if you are completing your degree at the end of spring 2017, have 6 hours or less to complete in order to graduate by the end of the summer 2017 semester, or graduated in fall 2016.

Exit Exam:

All bachelor degree candidates must complete the University Assessment Exit Exam prior to graduation.  This exam is now completely online and can be taken from anywhere. Students graduating in December 2016 or May 2017 will need to register for the exam through BearPass or You need to register for any of the GEN 499 sections for the semester in which you plan to graduate:  GEN 499   University Exit Examination

Intent to Graduate:

Students who plan to graduate in spring are required to file an Intent to Graduate or application to graduate online or print out and send to the main campus. If you won’t be graduating until the end of the summer semester, you will need to fill out the Intent to Graduate and list “summer” as the graduation semester instead of spring. If you plan to graduate in fall 2016, you would need to indicate that as your semester of graduation. You may fax, mail, or scan and email the form to the Office of the Registrar. The form has the fax number and address to send to if needed. Students may also apply to graduate online through My Missouri State. Caps, Gowns, Tassels, Hoods, and Announcements:    

Springfield students who plan to graduate and attend commencement in West Plains may order their caps and gowns from the Drago College Bookstore on the West Plains campus. Announcements should be ordered through the Springfield bookstore (instructions are listed below). Regalia is maroon for students graduating with bachelor’s degrees. Those graduating with master’s, specialist or doctoral degrees will have black regalia. Please make sure that you have the correct color regalia for the degree that you are receiving.  

Scholastic Honors:

If you are eligible to receive an honor cord for a bachelor’s degree, those will be provided to you at no cost and they will be available for pickup in Gohn Hall, 1st floor reception, or room #101 on the West Plains campus beginning April 3rd. A list of students eligible for honors will be provided from the Springfield campus. You will be notified via email if you should pick up a cord. If you have questions about scholastic honors please read the academic regulations or you may also contact the Office of the Registrar in Springfield at 417-836-5520. For information relative to diplomas, transcripts, proper dress for commencement, career center, and the alumni association please visit and click on the “For Graduates” link.

Graduation Announcements:

If you choose to order graduation announcements, there is a link on the Baker Bookstore web page for West Plains’ students to order those. Please visit or follow the instructions below to order:

  • Order announcements online at (Spring 2017 announcements are now available to order. Your cap and gown can be purchased at the Drago College Bookstore in West Plains.)

  • Click Order Announcements after you click the link above.

  • At the Herff-Jones page use the drop down box and select Announcements. This will bring up another drop down box. “May Ceremony” will be the default in the first drop down box.

  • Click West Plains Campus Ceremony in the second drop down box (the date should come up for Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 10:00 AM).

  • Choose your degree type in the next box and hit continue (Bachelor’s or Master’s).

  • At the next page confirm the date and time of the West Plains campus ceremony is correct for what you have chosen.

  • Once you have confirmed the information is correct, please select Announcements in the green bar at the top of the page and fill in all the information to complete the order.

Students who plan to graduate should check with their advisors and review their degree audit to cover any questions and finalize graduation details.
